RAY KURZWEIL / SINGULARITY / AI / ACCESSIBILITY / OPEN MEDIA — A LONG NOTE FROM A HOME LAB
CareTV began with a practical family problem. My 82-year-old mother has severe memory loss and cannot reliably navigate ordinary remotes, smart-TV menus, passwords, apps, or voice-assistant rituals. My 102-year-old grandmother is still mentally sharp but may increasingly be limited by mobility. I am also disabled and strongly prefer computer-mediated communication to stressful live human interaction.
The project is becoming much larger than television.
THE HUMAN STATES THE INTENTION.
THE SYSTEM HANDLES THE INTERFACE COMPLEXITY.
“Show the front door.”
“Put Rachel on.”
“Call Grandma.”
“What happened twenty minutes ago?”
“Send this document to Comcast.”
“Deal with this fax.”
CareTV is an attempt to make televisions, cameras, microphones, browsers, PCs, local GPUs, storage, WebRTC, SIP/PSTN, SMS, fax, and AI behave as one assistive operating layer instead of unrelated products.

WHY THIS IS TOPICAL NOW
The United States is arguing about AI data centers, electricity demand, water, pollution, ratepayer costs, surveillance, monopoly power, and concentration of strategic digital infrastructure.
I am not anti-AI. I am the opposite.
My question is: WHY SHOULD EVERY USEFUL AI WORKLOAD BE CENTRALIZED?
A front-door camera frame created and displayed at my house does not inherently need to cross a corporate cloud. A conversation between trusted family homes does not inherently need centralized storage. A local television command does not inherently require a distant inference round trip. A capable GPU sitting idle in a home can perform useful local work.
CareTV therefore explores LOCAL-FIRST, WAN-CAPABLE computing:
• local camera ingest and recording
• local PTZ and appliance control
• local GPU inference where practical
• local speech/command fallback
• local archives and indexing
• direct home-to-home WebRTC where possible
• cloud helpers only where they add real value
• open standards and replaceable hardware
• user-controlled identity, permissions, retention, and storage
This is not a claim that home computing is automatically greener than data centers. Measure electricity, water, network traffic, latency, privacy exposure, recurring cost, hardware utilization, and central dependency.
24/7 MULTILINGUAL EDUCATIONAL BROADCASTING
The project is becoming a home-based public-interest broadcast facility.
The initial goal is one continuous 24/7 4K educational YouTube origin stream PER LANGUAGE:
English
Spanish
French
German
Portuguese
Japanese
Korean
Chinese
then more.
YouTube handles global distribution. My home only needs to originate each language feed reliably.
ONE 24/7 PROGRAM → LOCAL AI / TRANSLATION / DUBBING / SUBTITLING → GPU ENCODE → ONE 4K YOUTUBE INGEST PER LANGUAGE → YOUTUBE GLOBAL DISTRIBUTION
This makes residential UPSTREAM BANDWIDTH an accessibility, educational, and public-infrastructure issue.
The conventional broadband customer is treated as a passive downstream consumer. CareTV imagines homes as ACTIVE COMPUTE + COMMUNICATION + EDUCATIONAL MEDIA NODES.
I expect eventually to need fiber. Before that, I need the highest sustained upstream capacity Comcast can technically provide.
OPEN-SOURCE COMPETITION WITH COMMERCIAL TELEVISION
This is not an advertising factory.
It has some technical characteristics of an automated commercial media factory, except the output is education, accessibility research, public documentation, communication, and open technology.
The software, workflows, equipment architecture, multilingual pipeline, recording/indexing ideas, and educational broadcasting methods should be shared openly so other people can reproduce them.
If homes, schools, nonprofits, researchers, and community groups can run high-quality automated educational channels at radically lower cost, that creates a real alternative to advertising-supported mass television.
AI-MEDIATED HUMAN COMMUNICATION
This may be one of the most important accessibility features emerging from the project.
I want to remove myself from most procedural communication with institutions.
My role should become:
APPROVE
REVISE
DO NOT SEND
The system should increasingly handle:
incoming communication → reading → factual organization → tone regulation → response drafting → attachments → approval → sending → receipt/archive
The same architecture should extend to email, institutional chat, web forms, fax, SMS, PSTN, scheduling, and eventually voice/video interactions.
For someone with severe difficulty regulating emotion during adversarial human interaction, this is not merely convenience. It can be assistive technology.
The person retains agency.
The AI carries the repetitive social, procedural, organizational, and interface burden.
I am building a programmable fax system next because healthcare and government still depend on fax:
INCOMING FAX → preserved original PDF → AI identifies deadlines/actions → AI drafts response → attachments assembled → HUMAN APPROVES → PROGRAMMABLE FAX SENDS → DELIVERY CONFIRMATION ARCHIVED
AI REASONS. DETERMINISTIC SOFTWARE ACTS.
I do NOT want an AI randomly clicking pixels all day.
AI is excellent for language, ambiguity, planning, and recovery. Routine actions should become deterministic:
human intention → normalized CareTV command → known API/state machine/UI path → action → state verification → success or recovery
Where there is no useful API, a local Windows agent can use DOM automation, Windows UI Automation/accessibility APIs, HID, keyboard/mouse control, screen recognition, and persistent UI maps.
PRIVACY AND CIVIL LIBERTIES
Cloud, AI, communications, financial infrastructure, media, identity, logistics, and political power are becoming increasingly concentrated.
I do not need a conspiracy theory to care about this.
Governments change.
Corporate ownership changes.
Policies change.
Infrastructure for vulnerable people should remain useful across those changes.
CareTV therefore favors:
OPEN PROTOCOLS
LOCAL STORAGE
DIRECT COMMUNICATION
END-TO-END PROTECTION WHERE APPROPRIATE
REPLACEABLE HARDWARE
SELF-HOSTABLE HELPERS
MINIMAL UNNECESSARY METADATA
USER-CONTROLLED PERMISSIONS
The political companion paper goes further into government AI, civil-rights safeguards, current data-center backlash, wealth/power concentration, and the distributed digital commons.
MILITARY/GOVERNMENT AI AND CIVILIAN TIME
OpenAI publicly acknowledges government- and defense-specific deployments, including a custom ChatGPT on GenAI.mil.
Civilian users are entitled to ask whether comparable engineering rigor is being applied to accessibility, persistent project context, automation reliability, and preservation of human time in the public product.
CIVILIAN TIME IS LIFE.
When an AI repeatedly forgets settled requirements and makes a disabled person restore machine state manually, the cost is not abstract “friction.” It is finite human life.
Hard operational requirements should become software-enforced invariants, not things we merely hope an AI remembers conversationally.
ONE PLATFORM, NOT A LUXURY PRODUCT
CareTV is intended to have a very low floor and a very high ceiling.
LEVEL 1:
free browser tools on existing hardware
LEVEL 2:
enhanced home with cameras, PTZ, local recording, simple remote controls
LEVEL 3:
high-end reference home/lab with GPUs, large storage, 100GbE, 8K research, 24/7 indexing
LEVEL 4:
institutional/research deployment with many rooms, distributed compute, redundancy, and optional self-hosted signaling infrastructure
The expensive lab is NOT the requirement. It is the research ceiling.

IMMEDIATE NEXT STEPS
1. get reliable high-upstream broadband / fiber
2. complete the 24/7 home server and recovery architecture
3. bring cameras and room communication into the CareTV grid
4. implement AI-mediated programmable fax
5. automate institutional communication around human approval
6. originate the first continuous 4K educational stream
7. add one language stream at a time
8. publish the software, architecture, failures, costs, and lessons openly
This started with one person trying to make television usable for his mother.
It is becoming an experiment in what happens when AI, networking, communications, media production, accessibility, and substantial computing power move back toward the home.
