- Caregiver Crisis: 53 million family caregivers provide unpaid care—valued at more than $600 billion annually.
- Aging in Place: Over 90% of adults say they want to age at home, yet homes are not equipped for cognitive support.
- Digital Divide: Millions lack reliable, affordable broadband or the digital skills needed to connect.
- Rising Costs: Avoidable hospital visits and delays in care cost billions every year.
- Privacy & Dignity: Families need technology that protects dignity and data while improving safety and connection.
Topical Relevance: Current Events and Developments
- Strengthening Aging and Disability Infrastructure (2024–2026): Federal and state initiatives are investing in aging services, caregiver support, and home-based care through the Administration for Community Living (ACL), ARPA-H, and state Medicaid programs.
- Broadband as a Social Determinant of Health: The FCC, NTIA, and many states now recognize broadband as essential infrastructure for health, education, and equity. Removing bandwidth caps is critical for health-linked assistive technologies.
- Telehealth and Remote Care Are Here to Stay: Post-pandemic data shows strong demand and better outcomes for remote monitoring, virtual visits, mental health services, and home-based interventions.
- AI and Voice Technology Advancing Rapidly: Voice recognition, natural language understanding, and on-device AI are enabling intuitive, accessible interfaces for people with memory loss, aphasia, and mobility challenges.
- Caregiver Burnout Reaching Alarming Levels: Surveys show over 60% of caregivers report high stress. Tools that reduce safety anxiety and improve communication are urgently needed.
- Privacy, Security and Ethical AI in the Spotlight: New guidance from HHS, NIST and global standards bodies emphasize privacy-by-design, transparency, and responsible AI—core principles for CareTV.
