Decision: do not buy any more 25Gb NICs. Return the unopened 25Gb cards and standardize new high-speed NIC purchases on dual-port 100Gb.
Bedroom-to-office physical wiring
- 2 × long straight 100Gb fiber runs, each at least about 90 ft.
- 1 × copper Ethernet run feeding the existing 16-port 1Gb PoE switch in the bedroom.
- The bedroom 1Gb PoE switch remains useful for TVs, YoloBox, miscellaneous appliances, cameras, and normal CareTV traffic.
- No new high-speed copper switch is required in the bedroom right now.
2. Next-Month Core Fabric
The 4-port and 8-port switch ideas were rejected because the network is already larger than that. The next core switch should be a 16-port 100Gb-class fiber switch, or the closest financially sensible equivalent that provides enough 100Gb ports for the full distributed-compute design.
Why 16 ports is justified
| Node / destination | Role |
|---|---|
| CareTV file server | Central storage / media / file services |
| 8K capture workstation | Highest-bandwidth 8K ingest and production |
| 8k-laptop1 | Major 8K development and production node |
| CareTV broadcast/security workstation | RTX 4070 Ti, 4×4K60 HDMI ingest, NVR, AI, broadcast |
| Mom's room | CareTV endpoint / future distributed compute |
| Living room | CareTV endpoint / future distributed compute |
| Basement | Future render / transcode / compute resources |
| Future GPU/render nodes | Multilingual 8K production expansion |
The reason to skip an 8-port core is practical: the long-term objective is to automatically produce as many language versions as possible every day. Additional GPU and CPU nodes are therefore not speculative luxuries; they are useful distributed workers.
3. CareTV Broadcast + Security Workstation — Buy Now
This machine is not merely a surveillance PC. It is the fixed studio CareTV real-time ingest, security, switching, AI, and broadcast node.
| Component / requirement | Locked target |
|---|---|
| GPU | Existing RTX 4070 Ti |
| RAM | 64 GB |
| Local SSD | 2 TB NVMe |
| HDMI ingest | Blackmagic DeckLink Quad HDMI Recorder — 4 independent 4K60 inputs |
| Network | Existing LAN initially; 100Gb fiber added next month |
| Storage | Durable recordings and media on CareTV file server |
| Metadata | Cloud RDS |
| Recovery | Local known-good recovery image + USB recovery media + duplicate image on file server |
| Chassis | Preassembled, quiet, cool, reasonably portable, easy side-panel access |
24/7 security workload
- 16 IP surveillance feeds.
- 24/7 motion-aware recording.
- Pre-event RAM/cache buffer and post-event recording tail.
- AI person/object/motion detection.
- Original camera H.265 streams stored or relayed without unnecessary transcoding.
- Recordings written to the CareTV file server.
- CareTV can show individual cameras full screen, grids, or simple elder-friendly presets.
4× 4K60 HDMI workload
- 4 independent HDMI 4K60 inputs through Blackmagic.
- RTX 4070 Ti handles high-quality H.265 encoding.
- Target quality suitable for 4K kaleidoscope / production-grade CareTV streaming.
- Approximate starting point: HEVC Main10, 4K60, 50–100 Mb/s per feed, one-second GOP, tuned visually.
- OBS Studio, FFmpeg, CareTV compositor and other production tools live on the local 2 TB NVMe.
4. Source Strategy: IP First, HDMI Only Where It Adds Value
Phones, tablets, laptops and mini PCs should progressively become native IP sources. Once native iOS, Android and Windows streaming exists, the four HDMI inputs become a permanent ceiling rather than a reason to add more digitizer cards.

This removes cable-swapping, EDID problems, capture dongles, and manual source-routing work. HDMI remains for equipment that genuinely needs it.
5. YoloBox Role
The YoloBox remains valuable as a portable $2,000 field appliance, especially for football games and other mobile use. In the studio, the CareTV workstation should replace its current fixed role with a fully AI-controllable, distraction-free interface.
The fixed studio system can automate:
- source switching
- recording
- file placement on the server
- metadata creation
- thumbnail/proxy generation
- YouTube/API streaming
- multi-language output
- AI-controlled overlays, captions and scene changes
The goal is to eliminate repetitive manual steps such as leaving a recording environment just to enter USB file-server mode and upload a clip for analysis.
6. Distributed 8K / Multi-Language Production
The long-term production model is distributed rendering rather than one giant machine doing everything.

The network should move jobs, assets, inserts and finished outputs rather than needlessly passing raw 8K framebuffers everywhere. Still, very fast fiber materially improves productivity when large masters, source assets, proxies and intermediate files must move between nodes.
7. Room Nodes
Mom's room and the living room can use Wi-Fi and existing copper for now. Their normal CareTV workload is light: voice recognition, playback and simple overlays. Later, they can join the high-speed fiber fabric as distributed compute nodes.
The MINISFORUM X1-class mini PCs are especially useful because their OCuLink / USB4 paths can support much faster external PCIe networking than their built-in 2.5Gb Ethernet, even though those external buses will not deliver a full native 100Gb host link.
Rule: because external buses can exceed 25Gb substantially, do not buy new 25Gb NICs merely to impose a 25Gb ceiling. Buy reusable 100Gb-capable NICs and let the host bus be the limiting factor.
8. Wall Penetration
The hidden room-to-closet penetration needs to pass:
- 2 × long preterminated 100Gb fiber cables
- 1 × Ethernet cable
A 1-inch hole is too restrictive. Because this is a hidden location and cosmetics are unimportant, favor an easy pull rather than a tight hole. A roughly 2-inch to 3-inch opening is acceptable depending on the actual connector bodies. Pull the fiber cables one at a time if possible.
9. Purchasing Timing
Buy now
- Dual-port 100Gb NIC for file server.
- Dual-port 100Gb NIC for 8K capture workstation.
- Dual-port 100Gb NIC for 8k-laptop1 external PCIe/TB5 chassis.
- External PCIe/TB5 chassis for 8k-laptop1.
- Two long straight 100Gb QSFP-to-QSFP room-to-room fiber runs.
- Wall-hole drilling hardware.
- CareTV broadcast/security workstation.
- Blackmagic DeckLink Quad HDMI Recorder.
- 64 GB RAM and 2 TB NVMe as part of the workstation configuration.
- Return unopened 25Gb NICs.
Buy next month
- 16-port 100Gb-class core switch.
- 100Gb fiber path / NIC connection for the RTX 4070 Ti broadcast/security workstation if not already integrated in the initial build.
- Begin additional high-speed room/backbone connections as budget permits.
10. Financial Rule
Keep current debt as low as practical. Spend now only where the purchase immediately unlocks production or creates infrastructure that will remain useful across multiple CareTV/8K projects. Defer expensive switching until next month because direct point-to-point 100Gb links can serve the highest-priority nodes today.
